Why Doesn’t the iPod Offer Gapless Playback?

The iPod is certainly the most flexible device for listening to digital music, yet it is missing a key feature that prevents fans of certain types of music from buying it: gapless playback. This technical-sounding term simply means that playback should be able to occur with no pause between tracks. This is useful when listening to classical music (though this workaround can help), but also for classic rock (think Dark Side of the Moon with gaps between the tracks) and live music.I’m a big fan of classical music, as well as of live music – I have lots of Grateful Dead concerts, as well as other live recordings of jam bands available freely and legally on the web. Quite simply, it’s a pain to listen to great music and have – gaps between tracks – that are performed – to – run together.

So, if you too want gapless playback, sign this petition. I’m not convinced that it will sway Apple, but with more than 3,000 signatures, it shows that there are a lot of music lovers who want this feature in the iPod.
