The iPod photo – A Portable Cartoon Viewer?
Thanks to my son, Perceval, for suggesting this. I don’t have either of the two items necessary to do this (yet), but this sounds like a great idea.
Why not use the iPod photo to view cartoons, especially those from the New Yorker? I recently wrote about The Complete Cartoons of the New Yorker, which is a wonderful book containing some 2,000 cartoons from the New Yorker, but also with more than 68,000 cartoons – every one ever published in the magazine – on two CD-Roms.
So, Perceval’s idea is this: why not view the New Yorker cartoons on the iPod photo? Great idea, if you ask me; much better than vacation pictures. The question is, however, can it be done? Are the graphics of the cartoons good enough to view on such a small screen? Are the captions readable?
I’d love to hear from anyone who has both the New Yorker cartoon book and an iPod photo to know if this is feasible…

I don’t have an iPod photo. I do have the New Yorker book, however, and the accompanying CDs. For some of the cartoons (especially older ones), I found that the resolution wasn’t high enough on the screen of my 12″ iBook– I have no doubt that those cartoons would be completely illegible on an iPod.
I do think, however, that it could be really cool if someone took advantage of the size and resolution of the iPod photo screen and created cartoons that looked good on it. What about a graphic novel that one could read on an iPod photo? Someone should explore that…
Then this graphic content could be syndicated via RSS and synched with the iPod. Hmmm… daily cartoons on the go, along with an early morning podcast – that would be interesting.
Such as getting your daily Joy of Tech to view on your iPod?
Really, I think tihs could be a great idea!! (in fact, it’s my idea!!)
But if it’s not doable… I’ll see when I have MY OWN iPod photo!!
P.S. : I’m still your son!!
Hi all,
interesting to see you talk about this. Currently I’m developing what you’re talking about (I had the idea 3 months back…a little future thinking ;-)
Would like to hear your ideas about it so e-mail me if you have some spare time.
You’ll here of it soon.
regards,
