Rob Griffiths, webmaster of Mac OS X Hints, has updated his best-selling collection of hints, tips and hacks. Previously called Mac OS X Hints, this new book, Mac OS X Power Hound (arguably a lame title…), adds more than a hundred new hints, and updates every hint for Panther compatibility. No Mac book is better for users who want to delve into the hidden secrets and tricks of Mac OS X, or for the aspiring power user. The hints in this book start out relatively simple, and go on to touch on many “wow, I didn’t know you could do that” things. This book contains over 680 high-octane secrets in every conceivable category, including the Desktop and Finder, iApps, Mac OS X programs, Mastering the system and Terminal, and much more.

As Rob Griffiths says on his website, Mac OS X Hints:

“For those who haven’t been around here very long, this book is basically a “best of Mac OS X Hints.” The first book, Mac OS X Hints Jaguar Edition (what a nice simple name!) came out in 2003, with about 550 hints in it. The new book had to drop some non-Panther-applicable hints (label hints? who needs ‘em!), but we also added probably 175 new hints, so there are now something like 680 hints in the new edition — all for the same list price as the first edition.”

While I don’t get cover credit, I worked on this book with Rob, updating the two command line chapters, ensuring that they are compatible not only with Panther, but also with bash, the default shell used in Mac OS X 10.3. While not neglecting tcsh, for those who upgraded their Jaguar accounts, the book now provides everything you need to become a power hound… um, a power user, that is.
