iTunes 4.9: Podcasts for Everyone!

Apple today released iTunes 4.9, which brings a huge revolution to the iTunes and iPod world. While podcasts are nothing new – they’ve been around for over a year – it is about time that Apple provides a simple way to find and subscribe to podcasts, as well as a rich directory with more than 3,000 podcasts, all for free.
I’ve written an article for iPodlounge, The Complete Guide to iTunes 4.9, with Podcasts, which provides all the details you’ll need to start downloading and subscribing to podcasts. Hop over to iPodlounge and get all the info on this latest version of iTunes.
While you’re at it, make sure you get the latest iPod updater, which provides a new Podcasts menu item for 4G iPods and the iPod photo. (For older iPods, you’ll have to access the Podcasts playlist that syncs to the iPod.)

Anyone have any ideas on how to get back the dynamically updating smart
playlists on the iPod? This latest updater seems to have broken that function.
Meg
Ah? I haven’t seen that yet… (Haven’t used my iPod today.) I’ll look into it and
see if I can find an answer.
I have a similar issue. My normal music smart playlists still update dynamically.
However, in iTunes these playlists don’t display anything I have downloaded via the new podcast feature. I have also set up some new smart playlists to include podcasts (they appear to all have a genre of ‘podcast’) but again nothing is displayed in the playlist.
But – and here’s the thing I don’t get – they do appear under the correct playlist in my iPod (even though they don’t show in the same playlist in iTunes).
Does that make sense?
Thanks
Michael

Yes, that’s what I’m seeing. Even if you try to make a smart playlist for Genre
Is Podcast, it shows nothing. Very strange.
As for smart playlists not auto-updating on the iPod, this is indeed what I’m
seeing on my upddated 4G iPod. I’m assuming this is a bug that will be fixed;
I can’t imagine that Apple would have removed this basic functionality.
fyi. iTunes v5 seems to have fixed this
