I got a drive with a USB interface, one that claims to read CDs at 40x. I tried ripping one CD today, and it's not much faster than the internal drive; maybe just a bit, because its speed is more stable. At least it's a lot quieter. I think however that you can buy an internal 52X CD unit and place it in an external case with Firewire 800 and you can get the speed you are looking for. Firewire 800 case can be a bit expensive, but if you look on Craigslist or around in other places for used items you can get them at a more reasonable price.
