Four Amazon.com Classical Music MP3 Bargains

I spotted four nice bargains on Amazon today, for all you classical music fans:

Alfred Brendel Beethoven piano sonatas, 10-disc set, $36. I just bought this set on disc, and it’s quite good, though a couple of the sonatas are live recordings, with applause before and after.

Holmboe complete symphonies, 6-disc set, $17.98. A 20th century composer. I like his string quartets, but don’t know these works.

Mozart piano sonatas by Richard Brautigam, a 6-disc set for $17.98. I have this set, and like it very much. It’s played on fortepiano (an older version of the piano which was played back in the 18th and 19th century).

Carl Nielsen symphonies, etc., 5-disc set for $17.98. I don’t know these works very well.

Enjoy!

While looking at the Holmboe link, I see that the set of Rubbra symphonies is also $17.98. Actually…it looks like they a number of sets like that: Alwyn symphonies, Rautavaara symphonies and concertos (two separate boxes)…

  2. kirk says:

Yes, the Rautavaara boxes on Ondine have been around that price, but it looks like Bis has either started selling box sets cheaper, or there’s a pricing error for their multi-disc sets. My guess is the former, actually.

  3. Aaron Meurer says:

I just bought the Brendel from iTunes for $42 (I had an iTunes card). I agree that it is a good recording, and some of the recordings are now my favorite for the respective piece. I wish it were cheaper for CD though, because I would enjoy the better sound quality.

I saw it on iTunes for $40. I bought mine on CD for EUR 38, which is a fair amount more, but for something like that, I want to have the CDs.
