How to Find the Shuffle and Repeat Buttons in the iOS 10 Music App
Lots of people have been asking where the Shuffle or Repeat buttons are in the iOS 10 Music app. And it’s true, they’re not easy to find.
Let’s say you’ve started playing some music. There’s a Now Playing bar at the bottom of the screen, above the buttons.

Tap the Now Playing bar to display the play screen.

Next, swipe up on the play screen (without pressing the pause, next, or previous buttons), and you’ll see the Up Next queue.

As you can see, the Shuffle and Repeat buttons are to the right of the words Up Next. As you can see here, the Shuffle button is engaged.
If you thought that was hard to find, check out this hidden delete button in the iOS 10 Music app.

Another bad UI choice. That is not a good change at all.
Agreed!
I absolutely hated the shuffle/repeat buttons in iOS 9. I was frequently hitting the shuffle button inadvertently and not realizing it until several songs played, and couldn’t figure out when it was engaged, so I would have to go back to the playlist and scroll down until I found the last song I remembered hearing. On large playlists this could be time consuming and frustrating. I like the new version way better, thank you very much.
Absolutely agree, this is terrible and indicative of how bad Apple has become with UI. They constantly choose to hide features rather than logically categorizing them. Thank you for posting though, I was pulling my hair out trying to find it.
Its been harder and harder to find Shuffle for quite some time. Thanks for the pointer.
Apple, Apple, Apple the bush kangaroo,
Apple, Apple, mystery meat navigation to screw you.
Very poor UI. I’d love to hear Apple’s justification for this.
But 👍 for the Durutti Column.
Couldn’t agree more. I stumbled on accidentally but my biggest gripe with this new OS of all is the gigantic feel of the new Music app especially the playlist view. Don’t understand how someone designed this to waste so much screen realestate and force so much scrolling. On an iPhone 6 or 7 you now can only see 4 playlists at a time. It’s truly shocking to me, in addition to the removal of the playlist button in the bottom. Miss the days when you could customize those buttons to show what you like.
I haven’t downloaded this yet – and now I’m terrified. Where the hell IS the playlist view button? I almost exclusively play from playlists.
Music app has been getting harder and harder to use. Grr.
I have not installed iOS 10 yet, but if the screen shots in this article are an indication, the interface for the Music app looks like something designed for children or vision impaired people. Big, horsey type and graphics by the looks of these screenshots. Sure, Apple has gone a bit overboard with fussy, thin type, washed out colors etc. in the past. But this looks like a real repudiation of good design.
Note that I have the system font set larger than normal, and the Music app, oddly, increases the size of those big texts (Songs, Artists, etc.), even though they are quite large to start with. Also, the … menu shots sho larger fonts than normal, because of my settings.
Great. I can’t wait ’til the next revision when everything works completely differently once again!
So there they are!
Another thing you can’t do that I’m sure you used to be able to: Add to Up Next. The closest seems to be the Play Later option.
You used (I think) be able to select multiple songs to play next in the order you select them.
But now, if you are halfway through an album, and select a track to play next, you can’t seem to select other tracks to play immediately after the one to play next.
All you can do is select one to play next – any others selected to Play Later will only play after all the album’s tracks have played.
THANK YOU! This has been driving me NUTS all day at work!
me too!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks so much for this fix, it was not obvious where to turn off the repeat feature and the whole music app is really clunky now with the obvious focus to simply get more itunes sales without any consideration for user friendliness.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much!! I really dislike the new setup with this particular feature, I was getting frustrated. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how the toggle the shuffle! Lol I appreciate this post so so much. Thanks again for the insight! 😊🙌🏽😎
A little help?
I cannot find the shuffle/repeat buttons. I swiped up and found the “Up Next”, but there were no buttons next to it. It’s making me really stressed out and I think it’s really stupid that apple wants to keep hiding their features.
Thank you so much for putting this really clear article out. Honestly, every Apple “update” makes me feel as though I’m dropping brain cells and becoming more dense. I dread the notifications from Apple. When this latest one came through, I thought “What?? why aren’t the new symbols in hieroglyphics or genetic code?” Your post made so much more sense than the official Apple support one. Thanks again.
How can they be so stupid? Answer they can’t. Cynical push to make you buy more songs
They first make it hard then change it to something else. Its too stupid to believe
really worth it. it was very simple to do following your instructions. change is difficult and in our quest to make life better we make it difficult. all the same i am still exploring the new update
Well then… I am glad I wasn’t the only one…
This find has made my day. Now I can listen to the favs over and over once again..
Until the next update..
Cheers,
Another design team trying to justify their existence with needless change. It wasn’t broken ya’ll!
I am no loner a fan of Apple. Today I purchased an Apple Watch and was forced to do the iOS 10 upgrade. I was dreading it and rightfully so. Who the hell do they have employed that approved this BS? Do they even use test groups anymore? A nine year old would have through the phone back and told them to go to Hell.
I am so annoyed because everything that was useful with the phone is now gone. Just last Friday, I was in a debate with a co-worker about why Apple was quality. He said that Apple was garbage and Iphone 7 is just a box with the missing push-in home button. I admit- he stumped me there, but I stressed the usability of the devices. Well now I owe that man an apology.
Despite Samsung inadvertandly creating a pocket bomb, they at least stay on top of the latest phone technologies to make their customers happy. They even offer phones in multiple designs.
I have purhased 5 Iphones and they all look the same except for their length and width.
I am so very dissappointed. Aside from MAC desktops and Airbooks I am not purchasing anymore Apple products until they get they make their platforms user friendly again.
Hell, if they can’t make up their mind allow the consumer to choose between 3 different user platforms to decide how we want our phones to operate because y’all can’t seem to get this mess right.
How do you turn perfection into crap?
My phone is not showing the repeat button at all. I’ve searched and the option no longer exists on my iTunes Apple Music.
Please help.
None of the above discussions were a remedy
Thank you
The article itself shows you how to find it. If that’s not working for you then you don’t have iOS 10.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!! I hate this new version and it was driving me bat shit crazy to change it from repeat one song to shuffle all…. y’all rock!!!!!
The UI designer should be fired.
Thanks for the info!!!! I couldn’t fix my music until I read this. It was stuck on repeat and I couldn’t find the repeat and shuffle button. You da bomb!! :)
Me da bomb! :-)
