Running the latest version of iTunes (11.1.2) on OS X 10.9 Mavericks, I’ve encountered something I’ve not ever seen before. When using a very CPU-intensive task, iTunes skips. I was listening to some music today from iTunes, and converting some music files that I just bought from FLAC to AAC, using XLD. This conversion app uses all available CPU to do its job, and iTunes was skipping. Here’s what Activity Monitor shows:
You can see that the CPU is used 100%. XLD was using about 370% of the CPU (I have a quad-core Mac mini), and iTunes only a few percent, yet it couldn’t keep up. I don’t know what’s going on; I suspect there’s some sort of buffering issue, as iTunes should be able to play music easily, no matter what you’re doing in other apps.
Has anyone else seen this? If so, mention in the comments the model of your Mac. Mine’s a 2011 Mac mini, with a 2.7 GHz i7 processor, with 16 GB RAM.
