There used to be lots of iTunes controller apps for OS X. You know, the kind of app that would let you control iTunes from the keyboard, or from a floating window. Granted, iTunes’ MiniPlayer has made some of these redundant, but the MiniPlayer has its limits.
While I like the MiniPlayer, one of its problems is that it doesn’t work well with spaces, or multiple desktops. I use multiple spaces on my Mac, and the only way to get the MiniPlayer to display in all spaces is to set iTunes to full-screen mode. This has a negative effect on iTunes: I can no longer switch to it by pressing Command-Tab. So I need to click the iTunes icon in the Dock – twice, in fact – to switch to iTunes. And that’s something I do a lot, especially when I’m writing one of my Ask the iTunes Guy columns for Macworld.
I use CoverSutra, by Sophiestication, a nifty app that provides both keyboard control – I can pause or resume iTunes from the keyboard, without switching to it; I can change iTunes’ volume as well – but that app has vanished. In addition to keyboard controls, CoverSutra has a nifty bezel you can display by pressing a keyboard shortcut.
As you can see here, you can control iTunes playback, change volume, rate songs and much more. But that window is too large to have visible all the time, and there’s no mini version of it. And the window isn’t visible all the time anyway; it’s designed to display when you press a keyboard shortcut, then go away when you click somewhere outside of it.
So I’d like to see a great iTunes controller. It would combine features of iTunes’ MiniPlayer and CoverSutra. It would be small enough to not get in the way, but also be able to remain visible all the time, and in all spaces. It would offer controls, and a search field, as both the iTunes MiniPlayer and CoverSutra do. (For the latter, you search from a menu extra in the menu bar).
A number of iTunes controllers have vanished since I last wrote a Macworld article about them. Where have they all gone? Does the iTunes MiniPlayer meet everyone’s needs? Am I alone in wanting more?
