New in iTunes 10.1: Disable Ping

You asked for it, you got it.

Finally! For all the Pingophobes, iTunes 10.1, just released, lets you disable Ping and remove it from the iTunes sidebar. There are two ways to do this.

Go to the General preferences and uncheck the Ping box:

Or go to the Parental preferences, and check the Ping box:

Thank you, Apple. We can now ignore Ping if we choose.

Now, if we could only get some color back in that sidebar…

Has Drag & Drop returned with 10.1? I cannot understand why this functionality disappeared. Not being able to drag from iTunes to the Desktop or a finder window or another app is a dreadful reduction in usability.

Drag and drop works fine for me; I’m pretty sure it always has. This is something I use maybe once a year – why is it so important to you?

I maintain a weblog for a (classical) music group that I’m a member of. I often include short music clips in posts, and it was part of my normal workflow to drag from iTunes to my Dropbox folder, for instance, to create a link.

My iTunes 10 gives all appearances of working as expected in terms of changing the cursor to a plus sign in a green circle, but nothing is transferred and there is no feedback to explain why not. Drag & Drop works as before within iTunes itself.

Hmm, this sounds like there’s something wrong perhaps with permissions. I’ve always been able to drag and drop, and I tried after seeing your comment this morning, and it works fine. Is your music on an external disk perhaps? Could there be permissions issues with the disk?

Maybe you’re on to something there. My music is indeed stored on an external disk, which is connected to an AirPort Extreme and shared over the network.

Hmm, I’m tempted to think it’s something to do with the networked disk. Try creating a new user account and adding a few tracks from that disk, then see if you can drag them from iTunes.

I store all my music on a AFP Share on my Ubuntu Server (10.04). Drag&Drop works flawlessly.
Not sure if it helps you any, just confirming it can work.

Thanks for the tip! I had found the option to remove it from the Source list but not the Parental Controls, thanks for that.

At the risk of self promotion, I actually created a iTunes 10 UI Overhaul. It makes iTunes “fit” better as a native Snow Leopard application – color sidebar, non-shiny window chrome, horizontal traffic lights, and lots more. Thanks for pointing out the ping removal. I don’t trust social networking and the last thing I want is to corrupt my iTunes library with someone’s junk.

thanks! but: grrrrr….every time i purchase a song, Ping still pops up at the top of my iTunes screen and says, “thank you for purchasing ‘such and such’ by ‘such and such’. Want to tell your friends about this? Connect with them on Ping.”

And then a “get started” button.

I disabled ping and set a parental control to lock it, so why does this still appear?

This is why i HATE Apple! SO controlling of my experience.

Thanks, but it seems iTunes has a mind of its own. I disable it every time but it keeps coming back. So annoying.

          FYI, for Brian (and others)
I had the same trouble with Ping not being completely removed from my itunes experience…
BEFORE you disable it in parental controls and remove it from the sidebar,
go to your itunes account, and turn Ping off there
and also disable the option labeled
          “Recommendations & Ping Posting”
          That’s it, all gone!
