No More Genius in the iOS 10 Music App
Genius is one of my favorite features in iTunes and the iOS Music app. It’s full of surprises. But it seems that Apple doesn’t like it any more. They changed the way you make Genius playlists in iTunes 12.3, and now they’ve removed it from the iOS Music app.
You used to be able to create a genius playlist from the … menu, but now, tapping that menu offers only these options:
My guess is that Apple wants everyone to use Apple Music, and creating a station offers a feature similar to a genius playlist. Except it doesn’t. A genius playlist from my library plays my music, whereas a radio station plays music selected from the vast Apple Music library. I want to hear my music, grouped by the genius algorithm, not a selection of music from everywhere.
It’s a shame that Apple has deprecated one of its most innovative features. It’s still available in iTunes, but for how long?

First the headphone jack. Next, The stars, now this. I’m ready to ditch every Apple product I use. I am disgusted by Apple.
I totally agree. Apple has used ratings since their first iPods and they expect people to give that functionality up after 15 years of rating music? Is Apple delusional – I can only assume yes.
I can say for certain that my 6S Plus will probably be the last iPhone I own. I seriously interested in Android now as Apple has got worse with every release…
I had every iPhone through the 6. At the 6s, it was clear to me that Apple was resting (screen quality and cam were terrible compared to Android). At that point, there was no reason to stay. These new moves are again, anti-consumer. I have stuck with iTunes for years, and have much invested in it, stars being one of the big features. For them to cavalierly remove them in order to sync with Apple Music is utterly infuriating. Like the headphone jack, an F-U to consumers. I am going to figure out how to get out of iTunes completely and use an alternate on Android and Windows. I can’t express my anger at Apple’s arrogance strongly enough.
I guess it’s “courageous” to remove one of the best music-related features Apple has introduced since the emergence of the original iPod.
I can’t wait for smug tech journalists to explain to me how the Apple Music radio stations are the future and I’m an old-timey, conservative technology-facsist for bemoaning the loss of a feature that has added a great deal to my on-the-go music enjoyment for years.
Can you still create the genius playlist from iTunes? I am utterly baffled by removing what was one of iTunes best features. I also was a heavy user of the stars data. I am now faced with potentially ceasing use of iTunes altogether. Is there an alternative I should consider? I am not strongly wedded to the iOS universe. I have however been a faithful iTunes user for years and years now. Apple is destroying the features that kept me on it. This plus the headphone jack removal is just too much for me.
I’m confused by this, because in Settings / Music, there’s a switch to toggle Genius on or off. But so far that switch doesn’t actually seem to have any impact in the Music app, at least as far as I can tell.
For what it’s worth I’m not an Apple Music subscriber.
Yes, I’m very surprised that the toggle is still there. It does nothing.
Perhaps Apple needs a lesson to teach something in a hard way.
Star rating, Genius (a likely placeholder option in Settings), headphone jack, force turn on “Show Apple Music” option.
I don’t know but I just don’t like how things are going right now. I just don’t like. I hate it. Progress does not always need sacrifice, especially when the sacrifice does not gain any noticeable benefit whatsoever.
Streaming and wireless is not the future. They are just a different way to enjoy contents, and nothing more. Oh, same as cloud computing.
Agreed. I find myself detesting Apple, a company that used to stand for such tech and UI vision. It’s clear that they have dreadfully lost the plot. I am only sad at having invested so much in maintaining my iTunes library over years to not have it ruined by Apple.
Headphone jack? I haven’t used wired headphones in years.
Genius Playlists? Not a function I used much at all.
Star Ratings? This one DOES burn me. I have dozens of Smart Playlists that rely on star-ratings to filter and bring to the surface my own music tracks.
I have not, and probably will never, sign up for Apple Music. I don’t need it. I have plenty of ways already to discover new music and I do still buy tracks that interest me. And I have thousands of hours of music I already own. Star-Ratings help me enjoy my music the way I want to.
If Apple is going to deprecate Star-Ratings then they might as well remove all of the edits I made to my photos too while they are at it. Star-Ratings and Smart Playlist that rely on them are just as important is the edits I make to my own photos.
Folks, I you don’t like the way things are going, whining isn’t going to help. Threats of leaving the Apple eco-system isn’t going to make a difference. You know what can make a difference? TELL THEM!

I did too, but I doubt that anyone over there will care.
I’ve been using Google Play Music more often recently. It’s free as long as you only want to listen to your own uploaded music. And it has a neat “Smartmix” feature that creates really good on-the-go playlists.
Genius didn’t work for me at all since the start of Apple Music (which I haven’t activated to this day and never will).
It’s not baffling, it’s greed. They want you to shift to Apple Music even though they’ve been selling you music for your own library for over a decade. I’m beginning to effing hate these people.
I can’t effing wait for a new Steve Jobs to appear on the scene and invent the company that Apple used to be in order to destroy the company Apple has become. ^%$# this &&^$.
