“Take Control of Beta Testing Yosemite” Says It All

Members of Apple’s Mac Developer Program were given early access to a preview version of the new operating system, and Apple began accepting signups from the general public. That public beta (a slightly later version than Developer Preview 4, released earlier this week) is now available — and so is a new Take Control book about beta testing Yosemite!

I love it that Joe Kissell has written a book about beta software. If you’re messing with the beta, it would be a good idea to read this book.

  1. Quite seriously, how can that not fall afoul of Apple’s absurd terms on the public beta?

From the Apple FAQ on the public beta:

“Yes, the pre-release software is Apple confidential information … don’t blog, post screen shots, tweet or publicly post information about the pre-release Apple software, and don’t discuss the pre-release Apple software with or demonstrate it to others who are not in the OS X Beta Program.”

From the fine-print of the EULA:

“You hereby acknowledge that unauthorized disclosure or use of Confidential Information could cause irreparable harm and significant injury to Apple that may be difficult to ascertain. Accordingly, you agree that Apple will have the right to seek immediate injunctive relief to enforce obligations under this Agreement in addition to any other rights and remedies it may have.”

    • It doesn’t discuss any Yosemite features, but explains how to prepare for it, set it up on a separate disk or partition, etc.
